Our Elementary student Elizabeth shared the story of Hanukkah with me this morning and we would like to share it with all of you.
“Hanukkah started yesterday at sundown. This is when we light the first candle and the middle candle, the Shamash, it is the helper candle. The Menorah represents the story of when the Jewish people were fighting a war with the Greeks. When they got back to the Temple, had been turned into a pagan temple. They wanted to clean it but there was only enough olive oil to light the menorah for one day. While they ran to find more sanctified oil, a miracle happened, and the light lasted for eight days! We celebrate for 8 nights. We eat fried food like latkes because there was enough oil. It is not a normal tradition to eat food in the Jewish community.”
For those of you who celebrate Hanukkah, Happy Hanukkah from us to you!
